As a runner, you should use a massage gun that massages deep into the muscles. Accordingly, you should consider the amplitude when making your purchase decision. This describes the distance that the massage head moves back and forth.
However, some massage guns have a very low amplitude. As a result, they don’t really push into the tissue but only provide vibration therapy. This at least helps to strengthen blood circulation, but not to effectively loosen muscles. Therefore, my recommendation is:
The amplitude of the massage gun should be at least 10 mm.

But not only the amplitude plays a role in deep tissue massage. Also, the massage gun must apply a certain stall force. Otherwise, the muscle cannot be massaged effectively. In the worst case, if the power is too low, the motor will even block when a little more force is applied.

Ekrin B37 is one of the best massage guns on the market. That’s why it’s in many of my best lists, including, for example, the best massage guns for sciatica. But the Ekrin B37 is also very suitable for runners. The reasons for this are as follows:
On the one hand, the depth of impact is 12 mm. On the other hand, the B37 has a stall force of approx. 40 lbs. This makes it very suitable for a deep-tissue massage.
The different speed levels are also very well thought out. So they already start at a low frequency. This allows for a fairly light massage, which is also suitable for beginners. On the higher levels, on the other hand, the massage is very intense and loosens even the hardest muscles.

It is the high-end device of the brand. It is correspondingly expensive but powerful. With its impact depth of 16 mm and stall force of 60 lbs, it easily reaches the deep tissue.
Moreover, the arm of the massager is adjustable. This makes it easy to reach hard-to-reach areas. Thus, it has everything you want for massaging your legs and other body areas.
However, there are also disadvantages. On the one hand, it is very noisy. This may still be tolerable when massaging for sporting reasons. However, the massage gun is also weighty. This makes it quite difficult to transport. In addition, the massage quickly becomes somewhat exhausting.

How to use a Massage Gun for Runners
The correct use of a massage gun for runners depends significantly on what is intended by the massage. The following two areas of application are distinguished:
- Prevent Muscle Soreness or Warm-up Muscles / Improve ROM
- Use on the Achilles Tendon
Prevent Muscle Soreness or Warm-up Muscles / Improve ROM
Using a massage gun before a workout helps loosen muscles, improve flexibility increase ROM. If the massage gun is applied after the workout, the following muscle soreness will be reduced. Therefore, I recommend you to perform the following routine before and after running:
- Massage the thigh first. Start on the back and slowly move the massage gun back and forth.
- After about 30 seconds, switch to the front of the thigh and massage it for about 30 seconds as well.
- Finally, massage the calf muscles for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Repeat for the other leg.
Important: Make sure that you move the massage gun only over muscles. You should never use the massage gun directly on the tendon, but also on bones, in order to avoid injuries.

Use on the Achilles Tendon
As previously mentioned, many runners suffer from Achilles tendinopathy. Among other things, the right massage can reduce the pain caused by the injury. It can also be prevented with the help of massage and specific exercises.
Here is how to use the massage gun for Achilles tendinopathy:
- Attach the ball attachment to the massage gun.
- Place the affected leg bent on a raised surface (e.g., a sofa, stool, or bed).
- Massage the so-called soleus muscle. This is located directly under the calf muscle, to the right and left of the Achilles tendon (see graphic below).
- Perform the massage for about 30 seconds. Move the massage gun in a circular motion over the muscle.
- Vary the massage – hold the foot still one time and move it in a circular motion another time.
Repeat the above steps 2 to 3 times a day.
Important: Make sure that you move the massage gun only over muscles. You should never use the massage gun directly on the tendon, but also on bones, in order to avoid injuries.
For this reason, the use of a fork attachment is often recommended. This has a gap in the middle, which makes it very easy to avoid the Achilles tendon.
