Theraface Pro Review

The Theraface Pro is the first and, so far, only facial massage gun. For this reason, of course, I had to test it. I bought it myself and used it on myself and my girlfriend. What the massager can do, what functions it has, and whether it’s worth the price, I’ll tell you in this review.

Summary

  • The Theraface Pro surprised me positively throughout. Only the rather high price bothered me a bit.
  • The Massage Gun combines massages with light therapy, stimulation current applications, and facial cleansing. Switching between the functions is possible within seconds and the handling and operation are very easy.
  • The volume is also on a very good level. No normal massage gun can match it here.
  • The amplitude of 3 mm is very low. This makes the application on the face comparatively safe.
  • The quality is also at the highest level in every respect, be it the material or the workmanship.

Scope of Delivery and Attachments

The Theraface Pro comes in a compact cardboard box, which is typically designed for Therabody’s devices.

In the box you will find a large scope of delivery, consisting of the facial massage gun and many accessories. Specifically, the following is supplied:

  • 1 x Theraface Pro
  • 1 x Flat Head Attachment
  • 1 x Micro Point Attachment
  • 1 x Cone Attachment
  • 1 x LED Ring
  • 1 x Microcurrent Ring
  • 1 x Cleansing Ring
  • 1 x Conductive Gel
  • 1 x Carry Bag
  • 1 x USB-C Cable
  • 1 x Massage Gun Stand
  • 1 x Manual

Thus, everything you need to use the Theraface Pro is included. The only thing I miss is a power supply. You have to use a power adapter from your cell phone, order a separate power adapter, or you can only charge the massage gun on your PC or similar.

Next, let’s take a look at the included attachments:

The three massage attachments can be used separately or in combination with the LED ring for facial massage.

The Flat Head attachment is used for general massage and relief of tension in the face, neck, and chest muscles.

The Micro-Point attachment has a contact surface with many points. This makes it suitable for stimulating blood circulation in the area of the forehead or cheeks.

The Cone massage attachment, on the other hand, has only a small contact surface and can be used accordingly for selective massage, for example, in the area of the nasolabial folds.

The LED ring is used for light therapy. For this purpose, it has three settings. These are to be used, for example, for the reduction of wrinkles around the eyes and the reduction of acne.

The microcurrent attachment is used for stimulation current treatment. It allows a small amount of current to flow through the skin and muscles. This is to reduce muscle tension and tighten and firm the skin.

The cleansing attachment should be able to be used for facial cleansing and remove such things as dead skin cells, dirt, or oil.

Furthermore, a heating and a cooling attachment can also be purchased.

The four different types of attachments determine the functions of the Theraface Pro. You can find out which ones they are and how well they work in the next section.

The attachments are easily changed via a magnetic mechanism. In my experience, this is very quick, easy, and reliable!

Functionality

According to the manufacturer, the Theraface Pro is a 4-in-1 device. This refers to the different functions:

  1. Percussive therapy
  2. Light therapy
  3. Microcurrent treatment
  4. Facial cleansing

Percussive Therapy

Percussive therapy is the massage function of the Theraface Pro. It is designed to loosen the facial muscles and provide firm skin. The three different massage attachments are available for the massage.

The amplitude is 3 mm. This would be very bad for a classic massage gun. However, the depth is well chosen for facial application. After all, the massage must not penetrate too deeply into the sensitive tissue.

The intensity of the massage can be adjusted via three power levels. These have the following impact frequencies:

  • 1st Level: 1,750 rpm
  • 2nd Level: 2,100 rpm
  • 3rd Level: 2,400 rpm

The values seem very high. Due to the low impact depth, the massage nevertheless felt very pleasant in my test. Even though I noticed clear differences between the individual levels. Nevertheless, the massage did not feel painful at any point. Instead, my facial muscles seemed very relaxed.

Light Therapy

For light therapy, the LED ring is placed on the massage gun. Then one of three modes can be selected. These have the following functions respectively:

The red LED light is designed to help reduce wrinkles around the eye areas. It can also be combined with a massage.

Light wavelength: 633 nm ± 10 nm

Light power (mW/cm²):60 ± 5 %

The red LED light with infrared light is also used to reduce wrinkles and can be combined with massage. The heat due to the infrared light can also relieve pain.

Light wavelength: 830 nm ± 10 nm / 633 nm ± 10 nm

Light power (mW/cm²): 70 ± 5 % / 60 ± 5 %

The blue LED light is said to help reduce mild to moderate acne, but should not be combined with massage.

Light wavelength: 415 nm ± 10 nm

Light power (mW/cm²): 45 ± 5 %

I myself have used the various light therapies. The heat from the infrared light felt pleasant. Otherwise, however, I could not notice any change in my skin appearance. However, this is simply because I suffer from neither wrinkles nor acne. The fact that light therapy actually works in these cases has already been described many times.

Microcurrent Treatment

During microcurrent treatment, small amounts of current with 0 V to 15.5 V and a power of up to 24 mW are sent through the skin and muscles. This is intended to reduce muscle tension and tighten the skin.

For the treatment, the microcurrent attachment is used in combination with the conductive gel. Depending on the power level used, I felt a pleasant, slight tingling sensation during use. It also made the muscles in my face feel more relaxed.

However, I would strongly advise against using it without the gel. Here I had to make the painful experience that the attachment then feels like a small taser.

Facial Cleansing

The so-called “Deep Cleansing Ring” can be used to perform percussive cleansing on the face. In doing so, the Theraface Pro performs shock-like movements as if you were using the massage function. However, the special attachment is supposed to remove debris, dirt, and oil from the skin in the process.

In my practical test, this worked well. Especially loose skin flakes were removed specifically and reliably. At the same time, the cleaning felt very relaxing.

The attachment is made of a kind of silicone. This has the great advantage that you can simply remove it after cleaning and clean it with water.

Usability and Handling

Operating the Theraface Pro is child’s play. There are three buttons directly on the handle for this purpose.

The lower button is held for a few seconds to turn the massage gun on or off.

The middle button is used to control the LED ring or the microcurrent attachment. It can be used to control the color of the LEDs or the intensity of the current flow.

The same applies to the upper button. However, this one controls the massage intensity.

The current power level is shown directly on the small display above the buttons for each attachment.

The handling is also first class. The Theraface Pro is very small and handy. The narrow handle makes it very easy to grip. Without the attachment, it also only weighs approx. 0.55 lbs (250 g). The attachments also weigh only a few grams. This makes even long applications possible without major effort.

Power Supply

The face massage gun has an integrated battery for the power supply. Unfortunately, as is typical for Therabody, no information is given about its capacity.

The runtime is stated at 120 minutes. I consider this realistic myself. If the massage gun is used for eight minutes at a time, one charge lasts about two weeks. That is a good value. However, the actual battery life depends on the used attachment and the used power level.

I find it practical that the battery status is shown directly on the display. So you know when the battery needs to be recharged.

Charging itself is done via the included USB-C cable. This can be connected to a PC, a laptop or a powerbank. However, this takes quite a long time. Charging via power adapter is faster. However, this has to be purchased separately if already available.

Unfortunately, the battery cannot be replaced. If it has a defect outside of the warranty, the entire massage gun has to be replaced.

Noise

As with all massage guns, I measured the volume of the Theraface Pro from a distance of 40 cm for better comparison. In doing so, I obtained these values:

  • 1st Level: ~ 40 dB to 41 dB – similar to a apartment with closed window
  • 2nd Level: ~ 41 dB to 42 dB – similar to a apartment with closed window
  • 3rd Level: ~ 45 dB to 46 dB – similar to light rain

These values are very low and could not be reached by any classic massage gun in my test to date.

However, due to the application on the face, the massage gun is closer to the ears. Therefore, I performed a second measurement from a distance of 20 cm with the following results:

  • 1st Level: ~ 44 dB to 45 dB – similar to light rain
  • 2nd Level: ~ 45 dB to 46 dB – similar to light rain
  • 3rd Level: ~ 47 dB to 49 dB – similar to birds chirping

These values are still very low as well. Accordingly, I did not perceive the noise level as annoying at all in the test. This actually makes the Theraface Pro ideal for a relaxing facial care.

Material and Quality

Therabody has primarily relied on plastic for the material of the Theraface Pro. Nevertheless, the massage gun makes a very high-quality impression. This is not least due to the matte surface and the appealing metal highlights.

The same applies to the workmanship. I couldn’t find any flaws or unclean edges here. I expect that from such high-priced products!

I initially had reservations about the smell. Parts made of rubber often smell unpleasant of chemicals. And although the massage attachments are made of rubber/silicone, I didn’t notice any unpleasant odors. Instead, everything about the massage gun simply smelled “new”.

Price Performance

I paid €319 for the Theraface Pro. It was also available for a similar price (up to $399) a few weeks later at the time of my test. In my eyes, the price is quite high. However, the functions of the facial massage gun are very numerous in return and work very well. Also, the massager makes a high-quality impression.

Nevertheless, I find it difficult to evaluate the price-performance ratio. After all, there is currently no comparable device on the market. If you want to have all these functions, you have to buy a massage gun, a facial cleansing brush as well as a stimulation current, and a light therapy device instead. Taken together, you then end up with a similar price if you don’t buy the cheapest Asian imports. Therefore, I would rate the price-performance ratio of the Theraface Pro as “Good” to “Very Good” despite the high price.

Conclusion – Theraface Pro Review

Summary

When I approached the test of the Theraface Pro from Therabody, I initially had mixed feelings. This was mainly due to the very high price. However, the concerns then turned out to be unfounded. If you were to purchase the four functions of the Massage Gun in individual (high-quality) units, you would end up with similar costs.

I was completely convinced by the Theraface Pro in the test. It is easy to use, allows for uncomplicated switching between functions, and I also liked the way it was used. In addition, the massage gun has very high quality and is easy to store and transport due to its low weight and compact size. In addition, I could only measure a very low volume during use. This makes the application particularly relaxing.

Accordingly, there is a clear recommendation from me! I would still buy the massager only in the offer.
